Logical fallacy

Appeal to ignorance

Also known as: Argument from ignorance · Argumentum ad ignorantiam · Absence of evidence
Common#22 of 71 by how common ← All logical fallacies

What it is

Claims something is true because it has not been proven false, or false because it has not been proven true. Absence of evidence is not, by itself, evidence either way (though a thorough search that found nothing can count).

Example "Nobody has proven ghosts don't exist, so they do."
