Logical fallacy

No true Scotsman

Also known as: Appeal to purity · Ad hoc redefinition
Fairly common#33 of 71 by how common ← All logical fallacies

What it is

Protects a generalization from a counterexample by redefining the group so the counterexample no longer counts ("no real X would do that").

Example "No true vegetarian eats fish." "Sam calls himself a vegetarian and eats fish." "Then he's not a true vegetarian."
