Logical fallacy

Motte-and-bailey

Also known as: Motte and bailey
Fairly common#38 of 71 by how common ← All logical fallacies

What it is

Switches between a bold, contested claim (the bailey) and a modest, easily defended one (the motte): retreating to the modest claim when challenged, then acting as if the bold claim had been established.

Example "All wealth is theft." Challenged: "I only mean that some wealth comes from exploitation."
