Logical fallacy

Appeal to motive

Also known as: Questioning motives
Fairly common#31 of 71 by how common ← All logical fallacies

What it is

Dismisses a claim by speculating about the motives of the person making it instead of examining the evidence. Motives can justify extra scrutiny, but they cannot by themselves show a claim is false.

Example "Of course the doctor recommends the treatment: she just wants the fees."
